Listen to Your Heart? A One-Week Discovery Bible Study

On the heart, the mind, and what we actually trust to guide us.

How to Use This Study

This follows the Discovery Bible Study (DBS) method, a simple format that works whether you've read the Bible your whole life or are opening it for the first time. No teaching background needed. Use it alone or with a group (it works especially well in groups, since the questions are built for discussion, not lecture).

Each day, do the same four things:

  1. Read the passage slowly: out loud if you can, even alone.
  1. Retell it in your own words, like you're explaining it to a friend who wasn't there. (This step matters more than it seems, it's how you find out what you actually understood versus what you skimmed.)
  1. Discuss using the questions provided.
  1. Respond every day ends with one small, doable action and one person to talk to about it.
There are no wrong answers in the discussion questions. If something confuses you or you disagree with a verse, say so, that's part of the study, not a failure of it.
Day 1: What's Actually in There?

Read: Jeremiah 17:9

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?"

Retell it in your own words.

Discuss:
  • Before reading this, how would you have described "the heart" — trustworthy? neutral? something else?
  • This verse says the heart is hard to even understand, let alone follow blindly. Does that match your own experience of your feelings — have you ever felt very sure about something in the moment that you later saw differently?
  • What's the difference between having feelings and being led by them?

Respond: Today, notice one moment where you feel a strong internal pull toward or away from something. Just notice it — don't act on it yet. Tell one person what you noticed.

Day 2: Two Ways to Walk

Read: Proverbs 28:26

"Whoever trusts in his own heart is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered."

Retell it in your own words.

Discuss:
  • This verse sets up a contrast: trusting your own heart vs. walking in wisdom. What do you think "wisdom" means here, if it's not just "your gut feeling"?
  • "Fool" is a strong word. Does it feel harsh to you? Why might the author choose such direct language?
  • Where do you go, currently, when you need to make a hard decision — internal feeling, other people, information, prayer, some mix? Be honest, not "correct."

Respond: Pick one upcoming decision, even a small one. Before deciding, ask someone you trust for input, instead of only going with your gut. Report back to your group or a friend on how that felt.

Day 3: Follow the Source

Read: Matthew 15:19

"For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander."

Retell it in your own words.

Discuss:
  • Jesus is answering a question about what actually makes a person "unclean" — his answer is: it comes from inside, not outside. What does that suggest about where our real problems come from?
  • This is an uncomfortable list. Does it feel accurate to you as a description of human nature in general — not any one person, but people in general?
  • If the heart can produce this list, what does that mean for phrases like "just follow your heart" or "trust yourself"?

Respond: Without confessing anything you're not comfortable sharing, talk with someone today about one place where you've noticed your own desires pulling you somewhere you knew wasn't good for you or others.

Day 4: Trust Somewhere Else

Read:Proverbs 3:5–6

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths."

Retell it in your own words.

Discuss:
  • This verse uses the word "heart" too but points it toward God rather than treating the heart as self-sufficient. How is "trust the Lord with your heart" different from "trust your heart"?
  • "Do not lean on your own understanding" — is this saying don't think, or something else? What do you think it's actually asking of us?
  • What would it look like, practically, to "acknowledge God" in an ordinary decision this week — not a crisis, just an ordinary one?

Respond: Choose one decision this week — big or small — and pray about it specifically before deciding, rather than only consulting your feelings. Tell someone what you decided and why.

Day 5: Renewed, Not Just Reinforced

Read:Romans 12:2

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."

Retell it in your own words.

Discuss:
  • This verse contrasts "conforming" to the world with being "transformed." What are some messages from culture (ads, social media, entertainment) that quietly shape how you see yourself or make decisions, without you fully noticing?
  • The verse says testing and discernment come from a renewed mind — not from intensified feeling. What's the difference between deciding based on how strongly you feel something and deciding based on discernment?
  • Is there a place in your life right now where you suspect you've been shaped more by culture than by careful thought or by God?

Respond: Identify one specific message you regularly absorb (a show, an account you follow, a common saying) that tells you to trust your feelings above all else. Talk to someone about whether you agree with that message now.

Day 6: Where Attention Goes

Read:Colossians 3:2

"Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth."

Retell it in your own words.

Discuss:
  • This verse is a command about attention — where you set your mind. Attention is something you can actually direct, unlike feelings, which often just happen to you. Does that distinction feel useful?
  • What competes for your attention most days? How much of it points "above" versus purely at immediate circumstances or desires?
  • Practically, what's one way you could set your mind on "things above" on an ordinary Tuesday — not just in church or during a crisis?

Respond: Pick one daily habit (a commute, a morning routine, a meal) and use it this week as a trigger to redirect your attention — even briefly — toward God rather than default scrolling or worry. Share how it went with someone.

Day 7: What You're Actually Fed By

Read:Matthew 4:4

"But he answered, 'It is written, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God."'"

Retell it in your own words.

Discuss:
  • This is Jesus's response to temptation in the wilderness — he's hungry, and he's offered an easy way to meet that need. He answers by pointing to a different source of sustenance entirely. What does "man shall not live by bread alone" suggest about the things we assume we can't live without?
  • Looking back over this whole week: what's one verse that challenged you the most, and why?
  • If "listening to your heart" isn't the Bible's answer, what is — based on everything you've read this week? Try to put it in your own words rather than someone else's.

Respond: As a group or individually, write one sentence that captures what you now believe about the heart's role in guidance, compared to what you believed on Day 1. Share it with someone who did this study with you — or with someone who didn't, as an invitation to talk about it.

A Note for Wherever You're Starting From

If you came into this study having built a lot of your life around "trust your heart" or "you are enough" as guiding philosophies, this week's material is not meant to shame that, it's meant to ask a real question: what is the heart actually reliable for, and what does it need help with? The Bible doesn't say your feelings don't matter. It says they're not sufficient on their own, and it points toward something outside yourself, God's wisdom, God's word, God's Spirit, as the more trustworthy compass. Wherever you land by the end of the week, the goal isn't agreement for its own sake, it's an honest look at a phrase most of us have absorbed without examining.
