5-Day Bible Reading Plan and Devotional Guide: Judging Rightly
Day 1: The Log and the Speck -- Examining Yourself First
Reading: Matthew 7:1-5
Devotional: Before we can speak into anyone else's life, we must first sit honestly before God and ask what we ourselves are carrying. Jesus does not forbid correction -- He forbids hypocrisy. The log in your own eye distorts everything you think you see in others. Self-examination is not self-condemnation; it is the necessary first step toward clarity. Ask God today to reveal what blinds your own vision. A surgeon cannot operate while wounded. Come to God humbly, allow Him to do His work in you first, and you will see others far more clearly.
Reflection Question: What blind spots might be distorting the way you view the people around you?
Practical Application: Before addressing a concern about someone else this week, spend intentional time in prayer asking God to search your own heart first.
Day 2: Righteous Judgment -- The Difference Between Discernment and Condemnation
Reading: John 7:24
Devotional: There is a profound difference between judging by outward appearances and judging with righteous judgment. One is rooted in personal bias, pride, and incomplete information. The other is rooted in the holy standard of God's Word applied with humility and love. The park ranger at Carlsbad Caverns made assumptions based on what he saw on the surface and missed the full story entirely. We do this constantly. God calls us to something better -- to slow down, to measure situations against Scripture rather than preference, and to approach others with the same grace we ourselves have received from a merciful God.
Reflection Question: In what areas of your life are you tempted to judge others based on appearances rather than a righteous standard?
Practical Application: The next time you find yourself forming a quick judgment about someone, pause and ask whether your assessment is rooted in God's Word or in personal assumption.
Day 3: Accountability Within the Family -- Loving Each Other Enough to Speak
Reading: Galatians 6:1-2
Devotional: Loving someone deeply sometimes means saying the hard thing. Paul makes clear in Galatians 6 that when a fellow believer is caught in sin, the spiritually grounded among us are called to restore that person -- gently, carefully, and with a constant awareness of our own vulnerability to temptation. The word "restore" here carries the image of a physician setting a broken bone. It is not a casual act. It is precise, intentional, and done for the healing of the one who is hurting. Silence in the face of a brother's or sister's destruction is not kindness. It is cowardice dressed up as grace.
Reflection Question: Is there someone in your life you have been avoiding a difficult but necessary conversation with?
Practical Application: Pray specifically for that person today. Ask God to give you the right words, the right timing, and a genuinely humble and loving spirit before you approach them.
Day 4: The Goal Is Restoration, Not Victory
Reading: Matthew 18:15-17
Devotional: Jesus lays out a remarkably clear and merciful process for confronting sin within the community of believers. Notice that the entire structure begins with going to that person alone -- not broadcasting the offense, not gathering an audience, not winning the argument publicly. The goal Jesus sets before us is unmistakable: gain your brother. You can be right and still lose the relationship entirely. You can win the debate and still lose the person. God's heart is always for restoration. When we approach a fellow believer with a scalpel rather than a club, we reflect the character of a God who pursues, restores, and redeems rather than simply condemns.
Reflection Question: Have you ever prioritized being right over restoring a relationship? What was the cost of that choice?
Practical Application: Examine a broken or strained relationship in your life. Consider whether pride or the desire to be vindicated has stood in the way of genuine reconciliation.
Day 5: Mercy for Those Outside -- Salt, Light, and a Watching World
Reading: 1 Corinthians 5:12-13
Devotional: Paul draws a clear and important boundary: our role of loving accountability is directed toward those inside the family of God, not wielded as a weapon against those who have not yet come to know Him. Those outside the family are not held to standards they have never agreed to and do not yet understand. Our calling toward them is not judgment -- it is witness. We are salt and light, not moral enforcers. The world is watching how we treat people who are different from us. When we extend grace to those outside while maintaining integrity within, we reflect the very heart of a God who loved the world before the world ever loved Him back.
Reflection Question: Do you carry a condemning spirit toward people who do not yet know Christ, or do you carry a genuine longing to see them come to know Him?
Practical Application: Identify one person in your life who is outside the family of God. Commit this week to praying for them daily and looking for one genuine, no-strings-attached opportunity to show them the love of Christ.
